The department is active in research in most areas of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra and number theory, analysis, discrete mathematics, geometry/topology, mathematical finance, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, representation theory, and time-series analysis.


The department has a Ph.D. programme as well as an integrated Ph.D. programme. The department participates in the undergraduate programme of IISc: undergraduate students can opt for mathematics as a major or a minor.

  • FPSAC 2022

    The $34^{th}$ International Conference on Formal Power Series & Algebraic Combinatorics was held at the Department of Mathematics, IISc during July 18–22, 2022. For details please visit the conference website.

  • ICM Invited Speaker

    Professor Mahesh Kakde, jointly with Professor Samit Dasgupta from Duke University, presented their work at the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians — a virtual event this year. Their presentation titled “On the Brumer–Stark Conjecture and Refinements”, discussed their proof of the original Brumer–Stark conjecture and many of its refinements over the past decades.
