" Extended Lemma on Bicharacteristics "

 Courant and Hilbert (1962) has an important result "Lemma on Bicharacteristic Directions" which is quoted frequently in the theory of wave propagation in multi-dimensions. We first state a general criterion for a vector to be a ray vector and use it to show that a bicharacteristic direction gives a ray direction. Next we generalize the lemma to include some additional equations i.e., the full ray equations and thecompatibility condition along the bicharacteristics.
