Abstract : The canonical map of a curve ) that is the map induced by the canonical line bundle) of genus g > 2 is well studied : either it gives an embedding or is 2:1 on to a rational normal curve. The higher dimensional case is much more subtle due to the existence of higher degree covers among other things. In this talk we show how the geometry of canonical covers ( that is the covers induced by the canonical map) is intimately conected to various aspects, both kahler geometric as well as algebraic geometric aspects, of a variety of general type.
