Abstract/Brief Description:

Of the several numerical methods developed for solving the
hyperbolic conservation equations, recently introduced Relaxation Schemes of Jin and Xin are the simplest.  However, these Relaxation Schemes are excessively diffusive and are not discretized in a genuinely multi-dimensional way. Excessive numerical diffusion makes these schemes less accurate compared to Riemann solvers and the lack of truly multi-dimensional treatment leads to inaccurate capturing of discontinuities that are oblique to the grid.  Two new Relaxation Schemes will be presented in this talk.  The first one, an Accurate Shock Capturing Algorithm With a Relaxation System (ASCARS), is a low dissipative scheme which can capture steady discontinuities exactly, by
enforcing the jump condition at the discrete level.  The second one, a Method of Interpolation with a Relaxation Approximation for Conservation Laws (MIRACL), is based on using an appropriate interpolation instead of standard discretization methods, and avoids the problem of dimensional
splitting.  Several test cases demonstrating the features of these schemes
will be presented.
